Before I get to the review of my Rolex Submariner Date 16610 pre-ceramic, I will give you a bit of the back story. It was whilst leafing through National Geographic magazines as a kid that made me get the Rolex bug – It seemed from the ads, that if you were an adventurer, explorer, sailor, diver or pilot, you would be wearing a Rolex .. In other words, if you had an exciting life, you most probably had a Rolex watch strapped to your wrist.
Well, it took me many years to actually get my own one, but a Rolex Submariner is my life watch. It comes with me kayaking, fishing, snorkelling, travelling. I love the shape of the Oyster case and the way light interacts with its’ satin and polished finishes, I love the deep gloss black dial on which the solid white gold hour markers seem to float upon. I love how tactile and precise the clicky bezel is – A pleasure to use every time I need to time something.. A dive, an egg or a carpark ticket.. My particular Rolex Submariner Date 16610 pre ceramic has the “pinhole” case which makes it super easy to swap out the steel bracelet for a military style nato, or dress it up with a quality perforated leather “racing” strap.
You can walk into a room full of people wearing “Haute Horlogerie” in the form of Luxury Watches etc and you can hold your head high with a Rolex on your wrist. It is Rolex that perfected the waterproof watch back in the 1920s. The Submariner is available in many differing variants, from plain steel non date models to steel and gold and solid all gold models and they are all as rugged and capable of looking great with jeans and t shirt, under the cuff of a shirt and bespoke suit and with a neoprene wetsuit for scuba diving. It’s not by accident that you’ll find this watch on the wrists of professionals and some of the coolest people on earth. And not because they are “Brand Ambassadors” but because a Rolex Submariner is a bloody good watch!

After a brief greeting, we sat down together over an espresso and cookies and quickly got talking. Surprise. Naturally, we mainly talked about watches. We discussed different models, new launches like the Tudor Black Bay Pro, Olaf's Black Bay Fifty-Eight (ref. 79012M), and the question of the bronze on watches really tarnishing over time. (Yes, it does.) All our gripes about the pinball machines and the occasional brazen arrogance of different concessionaires, the recently unveiled , the current waiting list situation, and then, at some point, cars, vintage cars, and motorcycles. The conversation was so relaxed that we almost forgot the real reason for the meeting.
Although the brand's models are far from being among the most expensive watches in the world, some might be surprised by the high sale prices at auction. It's not uncommon for a Rolex to break into the millions. But which models from this Geneva-based manufacturer are so sought-after that people are willing to spend millions for them? And why are Rolex watches so expensive? Here's a list of the ten most expensive Rolex watches in the world.
Needless to say, Rolex watches are expensive. While there are several models that cost less than €20,000 and are more in the price range of the luxury segment, the used market is a very different story. Many Rolex watches have already enjoyed an enormous increase in value and are considered lucrative investments and assets.
The tenth place on our list is shared by two watches. The first is an Oyster Perpetual from 1949 with an enamel dial sold at auction by Christie's in 2014. This model features a gold case on a leather strap and shiny gold stars as indices. However, the highlight of it all remains the colourful dial. Its price tag of 1.22 million USD in 2014 made this Oyster Perpetual from 1949 one of the most expensive Rolex watches ever.
An Oyster bracelet with solid links and end links matches the lofty standard of the burly case. This bracelet features a gorgeous brushed finish on the broad faces of its links; link shoulders are polished for contrast. The milled Oysterclasp continues to avenge the Rolex reputation sullied by the old stamped clasps. Milled steel imparts a feel best compared to a solid ingot of metal, and the luxuriously smooth “snick” of the lock’s action will inspire repeated use simply to admire its quality.
While previously stamped clasps made do with mediocre adjustable-pin systems for field sizing, the new Oysterclasp’s Glidelock moves with fluid ease. Its tool-free adjustment permits 20 mm of on-the-fly sizing in 2 mm increments. Slip “The Hulk” over a wetsuit or winter coat with consummate ease. Short of Bruce Banner-grade wardrobe issues, the Glidelock should provide all the sizing support an owner ever could require.
Truth be told, Bruce always came across as more of a Rolex Milgauss kind of guy, but a standard Submariner wouldn’t seem totally out of place on his wrist. It’s a sober choice, after all. But the Cerachrom-green bezel and sunburst metallic dial of the Rolex Hulk Submariner 116610 LV aren’t sober touches. They’re incredible.
