On some versions, they feature ceramic bezels, automatic movements, and dials with magnification lenses that are almost identical to those on real Rolex models.
For over fifty years, the Rolex President was exclusively available with a 36mm case. While there have been 39mm versions of the Day-Date, these were fitted with Pearlmaster bracelets and called Masterpiece Day-Date watches. Therefore, they are not considered true Rolex Presidential watches. 36mm was the classic size for the Day-Date since the very beginning but for some, it was too small for a men’s watch – even for a dress timepiece.
Costing approximately six thousand dollars, depending on the case size, makes the Oyster Perpetual the most affordable way to enter the world of Rolex. In particular, the larger 41 mm case size, tends to command the highest asking price on the secondary market.
Early on in my career reviewing watches, I always found the Rolex President to be a challenging watch to categorize. That is because the Day-Date does not fit into any of the traditional categories of watches that we tend to think of. It isn’t simple and basic enough to be a traditional dress watch, it isn’t built for specific physical activities even though it has the resistance of many sport watches, and its design isn’t inspired by any specific items that might put it in the category of an art or “design” watch. Despite its iconic status and massive global popularity, what exactly is the Rolex Day-Date President?
Therefore, in 2008, the Swiss watchmaker unveiled a noticeably larger Rolex President model fitted with a 41mm case named the Rolex Day-Date II. Then, seven short years later, Rolex replaced the Day-Date II with the slightly smaller Day-Date 40 model. Given their similar dimensions and styles, there can be some confusion as to how these two larger Day-Date watches differ from each other. So, let’s explore the differences and similarities between the Day-Date II and the Day-Date 40 to determine which Rolex President is the right fit for you.
Named "Celebration", this brand-new motif is available for the Oyster Perpetual 31, Oyster Perpetual 36 and Oyster Perpetual 41. Composed of differently sized bubbles fringed with black, it encapsulates the vivid colors of the lacquered dials introduced in 2020, bringing turquoise blue into play for the background color, and candy pink, yellow, coral red and green for the bubbles.
The Rolex GMT-Master II 116710BLNR is Black, Blue, and Badass. Rolex owns the patent for this striking two-tone ceramic fabrication, coating the index and numeral “wells” of the bezel with platinum — it’s no wonder why this watch is so highly sought after.
It also takes great effort to ensure that the bracelet and clasp are as accurate as possible, complete with extension mechanisms, in order to produce the super fakes. Best $100 Replica Watches USA Aside from the color of the hairsprings, it’s almost impossible to tell the difference between a real and an imitation movement.
For a long time the Rolex Day-Date and Datejust rode a similar path along side one another as appealing to very similar demographics. You can read my long-term review on the Rolex Datejust 41 watch here. The Datejust is less expensive, not currently produced in all precious metal, and has a slightly more simple movement. What originally made the Day-Date standout from the Datejust was the inclusion of a day of the week indicator – with the day fully spelled out at the 12 o’clock hour position. My understanding is that this feature was originally intended for active business people (men) who found it useful to not only know the date but the current day of the week. This was especially important for people who had reoccurring obligations and would be regularly (and clearly) reminded of what day of the week it was.
Expertise is required to discern the difference between a fake Rolex and a real one. When two watches are put side by side, it’s easier to see the little variances, such as subtle color shifts, varying metal finishes, and different feature positions.
While the exquisite GMT always commanded respect from Rolex owners, the real breakthrough since the mid-2000s has been the emerging buyer passion for the GMT-Master II. Ceramic bezels, new movements, “super” cases, and hardcore nicknames like “Dark Knight” will do that for the Rolex Batman.
And speaking of the last, Rolex extended its winning streak and scored a smash-hit from out of the [black and] blue with the 2013 launch of the GMT-Master II 116710BLNR. Call it the “Dark Knight,” the “Rolex Batman,” or the “Black & Blue,” but this watch by any name is a timepiece of heroic stature.
Despite the myriad of colors, materials, details, and features seen on GMT-Masters over the years, the use of black and blue on the same bezel marks a first for the GMT. A quick mental review of prior editions flashes past the mind’s eye when this surprising fact is broached, but it holds up under scrutiny. There’s very little that’s truly new in the evolutionary world of Rolex design, but the Rolex Dark Knight represents a rare exception to the rule. One of the best things about owning a Rolex watch is wearing it and enjoying it every day. This daily, constant wear is one of the best ways you can care for your watch. While Rolex watches are famous for their durability and robustness, your Rolex will inevitably gain scratches and dings while you wear them.
When the current generation of the GMT-Master II case bowed in 2005, Rolex reinforced the wrist presence of its pilot watch without actually increasing the diameter of the case. In truth, the Geneva watchmaker walked a fine line between enlarging the case and maintaining the nominal diameter. Still the traditional 40mm at its narrowest points abreast of the bezel, the “super case” GMT wears and appears larger thanks to flared lugs, enlarged case shoulders, and massive crown protectors.
That was blunt enough, wasn't it? Like Eric, many male Rolex fans already preferred the 41-mm Day-Date 2 over the punier 36-mm President. Yes, the 36-mm Day-Date is considered Rolex's more “traditional” Presidential model - but that is no surprise given that the DD was introduced way back in 1956 and reigned supreme in its space for over 50 years; that is, until the release of the Day-Date II in 2008. However, given that the majority of watch fans (both male and female) have gravitated towards timepieces with larger case sizes over the last two decades, it's no surprise that the 41-mm Day-Date II became an overnight crowd favorite upon its release. Consequently, we cannot blame diehard DD2 fans like Eric for labeling the 40-millimeter release an abomination!
I’ve come up with a two-part answer to that question and it is that the Rolex Day-Date is both the quintessential men’s jewelry watch, and the quintessential masculine gold watch. Each part of the Rolex President theme is about combining core horological utility with a status-communicating showiness that isn’t meant to be particularly brash or assertive. Rolex seemed to hit on a design that said “look at me” without saying “look too closely.” The outcome is a product that clearly says “I have money and at least recognize good taste, but I’m also concerned about long-term value and functionality.”
And based on the feedback we have obtained from many customers, I would have to agree. On the prior Day-Date models, the eyes could graciously flow up the band, link by link, until their final destination, the fusion of the band and case. Stopping at this “finish line” allowed the bracelet to fulfill an important purpose: to showcase the central and most beautiful part of the watch. With the new Day-Date 40, this is not the case.
On the new Day-Date 40, the eyes do not stop as they flow through the bracelet and reach the case. Instead, they have the tendency to flow all the way through the bottom of the watch, since the bracelet appears to do the same. This makes it seem as if the band is [as Eric says] “blending” into the case. The continuous band effect makes you feel as if you're on a never-ending Daytona 500! It becomes quite dizzying after a while.
But don't let Eric change your mind about the new Rolex Day-Date 40. Add your comments to the YouTube video above.
